The Certified Nursing Assistant program at Baltimore City Community College is designed to equip students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to excel in both long-term and acute care settings. The curriculum includes 104 hours of classroom instruction covering nursing theory, client care skills, and medical terminology. This is complemented by 40 hours of hands-on clinical training and 16 hours dedicated to preparation for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant Certification exam. The program meets the Maryland Board of Nursing’s standards and includes modules on nursing assistant theory and clinical practice.



To enroll, students must complete a Medical Terminology course, provide proof of various immunizations, and pass a math and reading assessment. Additional requirements include a recent Tuberculosis test or chest X-ray, proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or waiver, and successful completion of federal and state background checks. The program requires 100% attendance for the clinical component and students must adhere to specific dress and equipment requirements during this phase.

Classroom Instruction

  • The CNA/GNA program includes 104 hours of classroom instruction, where students learn about health and disease across the lifespan, client care skills, and medical terminology in a practice lab setting.

Clinical Instruction

  • Following the classroom component, students participate in 40 hours of clinical instruction. This hands-on training is essential for applying classroom knowledge in real-world healthcare settings.

Exam Preparation

  • The program concludes with 16 hours dedicated to preparing for the Geriatric Nursing Assistant Certification exam, ensuring students are well-prepared for licensure.

Course Modules

  • Nursing Assistant Theory (WDCE 40): Focuses on anatomy and physiology, infection control techniques, and environmental safety within healthcare settings.
  • Nursing Assistant Clinical (WDCE 41): A continuation of the theoretical component, this course covers practical skills in a clinical environment, requiring full-time attendance for a week from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Requirements for Enrollment

  • Completion of a Medical Terminology course.
  • Negative Tuberculosis skin test (PPD) or a clear chest X-ray.
  • Proof of immunizations (MMR, Hepatitis B, Varicella, Seasonal Influenza).
  • Successful passage of a math and reading assessment.
  • Ability to pass both federal and state background checks.

Credential Earned

Upon successful completion of the program, students will earn a Nursing License for CNA/GNA, certified by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
